I think it’s safe to say there is a bit of daredevil in all of us. Whether your choice is a mountain bike, a skateboard, a dirt bike, or a four-wheeler, most of us have one thing in common – we think riding is fun! Although we may not be ready for the X Games, we can pretend like we’re in the game with a DYI helmet cam. It’s a pretty easy, yet super cool project that will give you some bragging rights and lots of great memories. Here’s how to get it done.
Step-by-step DIY helmet cam with PC putty epoxies:
Step 1
Select your helmet video camera. For the purposes of this tutorial, we used a Contour HD.
Step 2
Remove center mount from the Contour HD helmet strap mount.
Step 3
The existing foam adhesive from the back of the mount needs to be removed, including the tape residue. Use a little sandpaper to get a nice, clean surface.
Step 4
Use a piece of foam to fill in the gap left from the adhesive to help keep the center mount from bouncing or moving.
Step 5
Cover the helmet with plastic wrap, stretching the wrap around the entire surface and conforming to any holes/spaces (cling-wrap works great). The plastic film will allow the epoxy mount to release after the epoxy is cured.
Step 6
Determine the exact location for the camera mount and align the edge of the mount with the center axis of the helmet so it will match your field of view.
Step 7
Mix your preferred PC putty epoxy according to directions. Easy, single use applications such as PC – Metal and PC – Crete can be used.
Step 8
When the epoxy has cured, pull the mount carefully from the helmet. Sand the edges to remove any sharp bits.
Step 9
Using a drill, make some holes in the camera mount in order for it to be secured to the helmet with nylon quick ties.
Step 10
Re-attach the camera to the mount and you are ready for your first on-camera road warrior experience!
